Metal Braces Treatment

Dental crowding problems can have a negative impact on the ability of a person to perform many functions. Since it can make it difficult to maintain routine oral care, it can make it significantly difficult to maintain oral health. This situation can also bring many aesthetic concerns. Despite the availability of various alternatives for treating crowding problems in teeth today, orthodontic treatments have gained prominence due to their ability to protect healthy tissues. There are multiple techniques that can be applied in this context. Treatment with brackets, one of these techniques, is often preferred because it can provide effective treatment for different levels of crowding problems.

What is metal braces treatment?

Metal braces are orthodontic tools that help fix crowding issues by using brackets attached to the teeth along with other devices. The main idea behind this treatment is to gently move the teeth into the right position by applying controlled force to the teeth and jaw bones with the braces. The main principle in this treatment procedure is to move the teeth towards the required position by applying force to the teeth and jaw bones in a controlled manner with braces. Depending on the desired aesthetic appearance, one can place the relevant brackets on either the front or back surface of the tooth. Another factor affecting appearance is the preferred material used.

What are the types of metal braces?

Metal braces are small, square, stainless steel retainers. Orthodontic treatment with metal braces is provided by creating a certain amount of force by placing a dental wire inside them. People often prefer them because their advantage in transferring force makes them effective during the treatment period.

Porcelain braces can be defined as parts whose dimensions are slightly larger than metal braces and prepared from transparent porcelain material. The treatment time is longer than for metal braces because the amount of force that can be applied may vary, but the placement mechanism and treatment procedure are the same. The most important factor in the preference of these braces, which are compatible with tooth colour, is that they are less visible during the treatment process compared to metal braces.

There is no upper age limit for the treatment of Invisalign clear aligners. However, the amount of tooth development is important for an ideal treatment. To provide suitable conditions, the period of eruption of permanent second molars should have started, and this period is approximately between the ages of 12 and 14.

How is Orthodontic Dental treatment done with Metal Braces?

In traditional orthodontic treatment, braces are fixed to the front surface of each tooth using a material-specific adhesive. A special beam activates the applied adhesive to secure the braces in the area. Thanks to the research in this field and the development of treatment methods, it is now possible to treat with braces placed on the posterior surfaces of the teeth. The fixation procedures of these brackets are the same as the traditional methods, except for their location characteristics.

After the braces are placed and fixed on all teeth, braces called archwires are placed inside the brackets. This connection initiates the force application required for movement. After the wires are inserted into the brackets, some pain and pressure may be felt on the teeth due to the resistance that develops. However, this pain decreases and disappears as the teeth begin to shift. Sometimes, in addition to the application of brackets, a fixation becomes necessary. Rubber applications can support bracket treatment in these cases.

How long does metal braces treatment take?

In the first brace fitting session, the treatment takes approximately one hour, although it varies from person to person. Following the initial procedure, we typically schedule additional sessions every 3 to 4 weeks until we complete the treatment.

The duration of these sessions is between 15 and 30 minutes on average, unless unexpected problems such as breakage of the braces or rupture of the bracket occur.

The completion time of orthodontic treatments varies considerably, as it depends on many factors. The patient’s compliance with the treatment, the level of crowding in the teeth, the presence of skeletal anomalies in the jaw, the general structure of the teeth or jaw tissues, and the type of bracket used are among the factors that significantly affect the treatment time.

What is the best age for metal braces treatment?

It is possible to plan orthodontic treatments at any age with braces, which will be applied only to regulate the teeth. The development process of the bones must continue to regulate the crowding that develops due to anomalies in the jaw bones only with orthodontic treatment.

Therefore, the treatment process should be started before the age of 12. When it is not possible to treat the skeletal anomaly at an early age, treatment can be provided by combining various surgical applications and orthodontic procedures at later ages.

How to maintain teeth position after braces treatment?

Orthodontic treatment with braces allows the teeth to reach the position they should be in, but this is not enough to terminate the treatment. In order for the teeth, which have increased movement potential against forces, to adapt to their new position and remain stable there, their stabilisation must be supported for a while. To ensure a permanent effect of the treatment, apply reinforcement with braces in the period following the treatment. Various fixed or removable reinforcement appliances can be applied for reinforcement. These auxiliary appliances may cause speech disturbances in the first days of wearing, but these problems disappear after adaptation in the relevant tissues.

Following orthodontic dental treatments, patients often prefer clear aligners, a removable reinforcement appliance. These aligners, which surround the teeth with a hard mould, do not cause aesthetic concerns and are not visible on the teeth. However, to provide an effective reinforcement with transparent aligners, it is important to use them daily for the period recommended by the dentist. Fixed appliances used for reinforcement are wires of various thicknesses placed on the inside of the front teeth. To provide a long-lasting treatment, it is desired that these reinforcement wires remain in the mouth for as long as possible.
