Screw-Retained Implant and Bonding Implant Method

Dental implants are one of the most preferred treatment methods for patients with missing teeth. Implant dental treatment is applied in two ways: screw implants and bonding implants.

Screw Implant or Bonding? What are the Advantages?

In screw implant and bonding implant methods, a specially prepared dental veneer made of materials such as zirconium coating or porcelain veneer is placed on the titanium implant fixed to the jawbone. In general, implant treatment has some advantages over other missing tooth restorations. Screw and bonded implants also have various advantages. These advantages are:

Screw Implants:

Screw-retained implants are made by fixing the crown or bridge on the implant placed in the jawbone by screwing, in cases where a single tooth is missing or in bridges to be used to replace more than one tooth.

Screw Implant Advantages:

Screw-retained implants are known for their longevity and can last a lifetime if properly maintained. This can be considered an important advantage. It offers the closest usage opportunity to natural teeth and is successful in terms of chewing function. It provides easy intervention in case of a problem with the dental tissues and dental veneers.

In terms of cost, bonding may be more costly than implants. Screw-retained implants are not very suitable for use in front teeth where aesthetic concerns are high.

Bonding Implants:

In bonded implant application, an interconnection element (abutment) is placed on the titanium implant placed in the jawbone. The process is completed by fixing single tooth crowns or bridges to this intermediate connection element with very strong adhesives. This is also called cemented implant.

Bonding Implant Advantages:

It is possible to complete the treatment in a shorter time compared to screw implants. It provides an aesthetic advantage in front teeth where the application of screw implants would not be very suitable. Since there is no need for a hole to access the screw, the crown is used as a whole.

Additionally, bonded implants may not be as durable as screw-retained implants. In terms of chewing comfort, bonded implants cannot provide the same performance. For this reason, it is not preferred in grinding teeth. At the same time, the adhesive material used must be cleaned very well, otherwise this may cause infections.

Differences between Screw-Retained Implants and Bonded Implants

  • If the implant application is in areas where aesthetics are important, such as the front incisors, bonding implants may be the right choice. In this way, since the dental veneer is applied as a whole, there is no problem of closing the gap on the extra screw.

  • If the application area is in the area where grinding teeth are located, more durable screw implants can be preferred. In this way, dental tissue problems that may arise due to excessive adhesive use are prevented. However, the screw must be covered with filling. Since the tooth is in the back area, this does not pose a visual problem.

  • When the dental veneer is damaged in bonded implants, the possibility of repair is limited and repair may not be possible without damaging the veneer. In screw implants, the dental veneer can be completely removed with the help of screws if necessary, and the gums, jawbone and titanium implant can be easily accessed.

  • Since the residues of the adhesive used in bonded implants are difficult to clean, conditions such as gingivitis are likely to occur. Since no adhesive is used in screw implants, such a problem does not occur. Although the screw may loosen, in such a case it is possible for your dentist to tighten the screw with a small procedure.

The choice between screw-retained implant and bonding implant options can be made depending on the area where the missing tooth is located, your expectations from the treatment, and factors such as aesthetic concerns. Additionally, in cases where the number of missing teeth is high, all fourteen and all ten six implant treatment options can also be considered. If you are missing teeth, be sure to make a choice in line with your dentist’s opinion.

What is a Screwless Implant? How to do a screwless implant?

Screw-retained implants have spiral-shaped channels in their structure. Screwless implants do not have these channels, and thanks to their special design, the titanium implant clings to the jawbone. Screwless implants are placed with less surgery than screw implants, and the recovery time is shorter in this treatment. However, the choice of screw or screwless implant should be decided by the dentist according to the condition of the jaw bone and the local area where the implant will be used.
