Sinus Lift Treatment

Numerous factors can lead to tooth loss, and genetic factors can sometimes cause missing teeth. The problems in areas where teeth are missing extend beyond their functional or aesthetic losses. The lack of teeth in an area of the mouth prevents the jawbone in that area from participating in the function, and in this case, the ineffective bone tissue is destroyed over time. With this destruction, the bone volume may decrease; its border may approach the surrounding anatomical formations, or sagging may be observed in the sinus cavities adjacent to the jaw bones. In these cases, various additional surgical procedures may be required when implant application is desired to treat tooth deficiencies. Sinus lift (sinus floor elevation) treatments are one of the procedures that can be applied in this context.

What is a sinus lift?

A sinus lift is a surgery performed to restore the height of the bone tissue by lifting the lower wall of the sinus cavities adjacent to the upper jaw bones for dental implant treatment. The floor area of the sinus cavity usually sags due to the lack of teeth in the posterior region of the upper jaw. Sinus lift is applied for long-lasting restoration procedures in these areas.

How is sinus lift procedure performed?

During the first scheduled examination session, routine clinical and radiographic evaluations are performed, and a treatment plan is outlined. Three-dimensional radiography images are used for detailed planning. When the treatment phase begins, local anaesthesia is used to make the procedure comfortable.

After the treatment area is numb, various tissue arrangements are made in order to reach the relevant sinus cavity. When the membrane tissue surrounding the sinus is reached, a part of the membrane is separated from the bone surface to which it is connected, and a space is created in this area.

A bone graft suitable for the patient is placed in this area, and a special membrane is applied to ensure that the graft remains immobile. The treatment is then completed by suturing and closing the soft tissues surrounding the operation area.

Is a sinus lift and implant at the same time possible?

Sinus lift and implant treatments can be done in one session if the area is suitable. The stabilisation of the planned implant is the primary factor that determines the suitability of this situation.

The existing bone tissue must allow the implant to remain immobile by adequately adhering to the tissues. If the implant can’t be kept stable in the mouth, ossification should be expected after the sinus lift.

In cases where stabilisation cannot be achieved, performing these procedures in the same session may cause both treatments to fail.

What to do after sinus lift surgery?

  • To heal properly, take the dentist’s prescribed medications as directed.
  • Some pain and edema may occur in the period following the treatment due to a surgical application. Regular use of medication and cold compresses on the first day following the treatment will help minimise these effects.
  • It is important for the healing process to avoid procedures that cause pressure changes in the mouth or nose in the first days following treatment. For this reason, activities such as spitting and vigorous blowing should be suspended for a while. During this period, avoid factors that may cause sneezing or coughing as much as possible.
  • Tooth brushing is not recommended on the day of treatment in order for healing tissue to form. However, you should resume routine oral care with a soft toothbrush 24 hours after the treatment. Maintaining oral hygiene is crucial for achieving optimal healing.
  • In the days after treatment, avoid products like cigarettes or alcohol that disrupt tissue healing. During this period, it is also recommended to avoid exercises that strain the breath.
  • Avoiding high-pressure situations, such as underwater diving or aeroplane travel, for at least a month is important for the success of the treatment.
